Frail care, assisted living or a retirement village? Choosing the right level of care

A plain-language guide to the main types of senior living in South Africa, and the signs that it is time for more support.

The words used for senior living in South Africa overlap, which makes searching confusing. Here is what each one usually means.

Retirement village

Independent living for older people in a secure estate. Residents look after themselves, with services such as security, maintenance and often a dining room.

Assisted living

A private room or small apartment with meals, housekeeping and help available, but not 24-hour nursing. Good for someone who is mostly independent but should not be alone.

Frail care

Round-the-clock nursing care for people who need hands-on help with daily activities or medical supervision. Facilities must be registered with the Department of Social Development.

Dementia care

A secure unit with specially trained staff for people living with dementia, particularly if they wander or become distressed.

Signs it may be time for more support

Falls, missed medication, weight loss, an unkept home, confusion about money or time, and a family carer who is exhausted are all signs worth acting on. A GP assessment is a good first step.
